Learning Reflections 3 of Seminar in English Language Teaching

Learning Reflections 3

 Seminar in English Language Teaching

This week , my group and I presented work from last week (global English, ESL,EFL,EIL, role of English in Thailand, role of English as a global language and lingua franca). And then, I watched the video of David crystal for learning "World Englishes". David crystal said that it has a variety of English world wide. Everywhere, Every country used a variety of English, that is depend on cultural influence. All countries on the world have their own English, have their own way and style to communicate and use; If the native speaker come to other countries that are speaking their own English style, they are a foreigner in that countries.
And my group and I summarized the video and presented in front of class.

My group and I summarized that:
" English  became to Englishes about 400 years ago because British immigrated to America, from immigration it's cause propagation English language around the world. Therefore, everywhere, every countries use a variety of English, all countries around the world have the English language for their own style. It's depend on cultural influence. For example, in South Africa; there are 10,000 borrow world such as robot is a traffic light, Sold Hold (not sure "SOHO") is a traditional sex shop etc. When native speaker came to the another countries that have their own English style, they just become a foreigner. "

And then, professor summarized the knowledge and concept about all content that we presented already. She assigned to search "How difference between ESL and EFL".

I think watching the video is so interesting and make me to attention in class. It's easy to understand and easy to learn native accent. But, it has some different point for me that are vocabulary, and he speak so fast. So I can't get some sentence or information.

I feel excited to watch the video which I can get the knowledge and idea from them. In addition, I can practice my English accent and know the new word also. I am so interested in this teaching way.

Learning Reflections 2 of Seminar in English Language Teaching

Learning Reflections 2

Seminar in English Language Teaching

This is a second period for this course. The professor assigned me to find the journals last week about:
           - Global English
           - EFL
           - ESL
           - EIL
           - role of English in Thailand
           - role of English as a global language
In this period, I discussed and shared the information of all journals with my group and then, We are going to present in front of class all topics. After we shared the journals' information,

              My group summarized that:
  • Global English is the English language that is used by the most people for many reason such as communication, business, Education, etc. And It is regarded to the interlingua that world wide's people use for communication.
  • EFL is a traditional term for the use or ready of the English language by non-native speaker in countries where English is generally not a local medium of communication. It is usually learned in environments where the language of the community and the school is not English
  • ESL classroom is in a country where English is the dominant language. It is based on the premise that English is the language of the community and the school ant that students have access to English models.
  • EIL is the English language that was spoken in many countries both as a native and as a second or foreign language. It is taught in the schools in almost every country on this earth. It is a living and vibrant language spoken by over 300 million people as their native language. Millions more speak it as an additional language.
  • The role of English in Thailand is quite important as it is in many other developing countries. New technology and the adoption of the internet have resulted in a major transition in terms of business, education, science, and technological progress, all of which demand high proficiency in English
  • The role of English as a global language
As global communication expands throughout the world, so does the need for a global language. A language that is recognized and understood by people everywhere. In many parts of the world that language has been established, English. In most countries around the globe the English language can be found in some form or another, whether it be an international news broadcast, such as CNN, or a Chicago Bulls tee-shirt. "What centuries of British colonialism and decades of Esperanto couldn’t do, a few years of free trade, MTV, and the Internet has. English dominates international business, politics, and culture more than any other language in human history." (Rohde) For this world to be truly global, there must be some commonality or ease of communication. "If trade and tourism around the world are going to operate and a global economy function and a global culture flourish, a widely shared, reasonably accessible language is requisite." (Stevenson)
"A global economic and political structure needs a common tongue." (Stevenson) Everyone has their own reasons for the rise of English as the global language.

And the professor gives a journal and assigns the students to read it.

I find easy that ; when we work together, brainstorming and share the idea, or we read it together. There are easy to understand and think "What's journals write about?" or "What's journals involved with?".

I find difficult with some hard words, but professor said "It is not necessary to know the meaning of every words, but you can guess form the context and summarize them." So, I get easy now.

I didn't have any problem, it's good. I can work with friends. I can share my idea, and help to analyze journals together. I got the knowledge from the journals that my friends found them. I can summarize the journals with friends very well.

I feel better than the first time. This course make me to exchange the information, knowledge, and thinking with other. I like it.!!!!

Learning Reflections 1

Seminar in English Language Teaching Course

This is the first meeting in Seminar in English Language Teaching course(1554903). Teacher explained the course outline and made understanding "What will we learn in this class?". I have to search for information concerning English language pedagogy and problem, from a variety of sources such as research, journals, newspaper, articles and online resources and learn about them. I have to discuss and analysis of reading in English. I have to know about Global English, context of English, Language teaching, ESL. EFL,EIL, role of English and everything about Teaching in English.

First period, teacher gave assignment to think back about the English Teaching courses that I've learned already;  English Teaching methodology1, English Language assessment and Evalution, Cultural of native speakers, Learning English throught Projects; and discussed with group members "What did we learn", "advantages and disadvantages", "Suggestion to this course", then presented in front of class.

                    - English Teaching methodology1 is about surveying the different approaches and seeking a variety of techniques, innovation, activities, and teaching environment from each approach that best facilitate English language learning, Evolution of English, etc.

                    -English Language Assessment and Evalution
This course is an overview of how to assess English language teaching and evaluate an English teaching program.

                    - Cultural of native speakers is about Cultural and traditions of English speakers, Do and Don't, role play, prohibition in each countries, etc.

                    - Learning English throught Projects
This course is a practicing that integreted language skills through project management, including producing language products; information research projects, survey project, and producing projects with the application of presentation techniques.

I think this course is not easy for me. It 's hard to read the articles, hard to find the good article or information. My problem is some difficult vocabulary and grammar, and I don't know how to analysis the articles in the best way. It's hard to make understanding all articles and make it clearly for myself. Some academic articles are more difficult than my ability.
Therefore, my attitude for Seminar in English Language Teaching course, is not too good, not too bad but I feel confuse and unconvinced in my ability for this course. I love reading but I'm not sure for reading the academic artcles. However, I will try my best.!!!

Try my best !!!!
